Tornado season is upon us, and we want to ensure that everyone knows what to do in the event of a tornado/severe weather warning.

A severe weather warning is issued when there are thunderstorms with winds greater than 58 miles per hour, or when a tornado has been sighted. The city will activate its siren system, and Madonna University will issue a RAVE Alert message via text and email. (Please go to MY Portal to confirm you are enrolled to receive these alerts.) There will be no alarm sounded on campus, but you may hear the city sirens outside.

When a severe weather warning has been issued, please take shelter in the basement or lowest floor of a permanent structure. Try to put as many walls between you and the tornado as possible. On campus that would include such places as: the stairwells in the Franciscan Center, the Science Lecture Hall, Room 1301, in the Administration Building, and the restrooms near the Chapel and the interior hallway behind the Fitness Center in the University Center. (Campus maps, with tornado shelters labeled, are being printed and will be posted soon.)

Stay away from windows, doors and outside walls. Protect your head with your hands or if you can a pillow, blanket, or mattress.

It is not safe to be outdoors during thunderstorms. If caught outdoors, go to the nearest building. Open structures such as picnic shelters do not offer protection against severe weather. It does not have to be raining for lightning to strike.

If you have safety questions or concerns, contact Madonna Public Safety, 734-432-5442, or Director of Public Safety Nan Gelman at 734-432-5325.
